Uncovering Technological and Environmental Potentials of Aluminum Alloy Scraps Recycling Through Friction Stir Consolidation
2020
Conventional metal chips recycling processes are energy-intensive with low efficiency and permanent material losses during re-melting. Solid state recycling allows direct recycling of metal scraps into semi-finished products. It is expected that this process category would lower the environmental performance of metals recycling. Friction Stir Consolidation is a new solid-state technique taking advantage of friction heat generation and severe plastic deformation to consolidate chips into billets. In this research, the feasibility of Friction Stir Consolidation as aluminum chips recycling process is analyzed. Specifically, an experimental campaign has been carried out with varying main proces…

COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING OF SOLID BONDING PHENOMENA
2014
Joining is a fundamental technological process in manufacturing used to create a single piece from two or more parts. Welding is still today one of the most popular joining techniques used in manufacturing allowing a permanent junction. Traditional welding processes are based on the melting of the materials to be joined. In this way, several defects may arise because of solidification problems, joints deformation due to elevated residual stress and metallurgical integrity of the joints (intermetallic, porosities, etc). As an example, some aluminum alloys present considerable problems the junction is carried out by traditional fusion welding methods. During the melting process, in fact, the …
Design and development of a new machine tool for continuous friction stir extrusion
2023
In the present paper the Continuous Friction Stir Extrusion process (CFSE), derived from the already known Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE), is proposed for effective solid-state recycling of metal scraps. A new dedicated machine tool was designed and developed. A Lagrangian implicit thermomechanical numerical model was set up and used to determine the proper ranges of the most relevant process parameters. An effective case study is proposed, involving the actual extrusion of a recycled wire in a continuous way. Metallurgical observations and mechanical characterization tests were carried out on the obtained specimen showing the potential of the process and its industrial feasibility.(c) 2023 …
Fundamental investigation on the mechanical behavior of weld seams
The solid state welding processes allow joints free from defects with reduced residual stresses and low distortion. However, such processes are generally characterized by a complex mechanical junction because of the particular material flow. Therefore, the design and optimization of the processes in which the solid bonding phenomenon occurs are difficult and requires a large number of tests. The purpose of this research is the description on the mechanical behavior of welded seams obtained through the friction stir welding (FSW) and linear friction welding (LFW) processes by analyzing the same phenomenon that occurs in both metallurgical processes, named the solid bonding phenomenon. The ai…
